A mooncake is a traditional Chinese pastry with a thin, tender crust wrapped around a dense, sweet filling, traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. In Chinese, it's called 月饼 (yuèbǐng), literally "moon cake." The tradition has spread across Asia under different names: in Vietnam it's known as bánh trung thu ("mid-autumn cake"), and similar pastries are enjoyed during the same festival in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, where the Chinese name and Cantonese/Hokkien variants are commonly used.
